Dr. Ellen Henderson began working in the graduate counseling program at Gwynedd Mercy University in 2017 as an adjunct and counseling field coordinator and now serves as an assistant professor. She began her career in higher education as a graduate assistant in athletics at Oregon State University in 2001, where she received her master’s degree in counseling.
Dr. Henderson has spent the last 20+ years in counseling and administration in higher education. She worked in counseling and administration at Oregon State, the University of Maryland, and Temple University, where she received her doctorate degree in 2007. She has been a faculty member in undergraduate and graduate psychology and counseling throughout her career.
Dr. Henderson strives to foster a student-centered approach to counselor education, with an emphasis on the balance of challenge and support, and the goal of preparing knowledgeable, accountable, and passionate emerging counselors. Dr. Henderson’s counseling interests are in curriculum design, the field experience, and counselor disposition training in an online program model.
Sports have always been a huge part of her life. She was a recruited collegiate athlete and coached swimming for many years. She spends the majority of her free time at her son’s baseball, basketball, and football games, or with her husband and two rescue dogs, but can otherwise can be found anywhere in the sun with a good book.
