By Wivina Chmura, Associate Director of Admissions

Ready to make a change? Gwynedd Mercy University is a terrific option for transfer students, whether you’re coming from a two-year or four-year college.

As a GMercyU specially trained admissions counselor, I'm here to make the transition as easy as possible – and help you maximize the credits you’ve already earned toward any of our 40+ undergraduate programs. Below, explore why GMercyU is one of the best colleges for transfer students.

Why Transfer Students Choose GMercyU

As a small school, the assistance you’ll receive during the admissions process is just the start of your personalized journey at GMercyU. While GMercyU is large enough to offer all the opportunities you want, it’s small enough that your faculty and classmates will know you by name.

“If you're interested in finding out more about GMercyU, just know this: the professors care immensely about you,” said Justin Henderson ’23, who transferred to GMercyU from Bucks County Community College. “Your success and well-being are their number one priority. They will help in any way they can, so you can reach your full potential. There are also the students – the people you get to work with and learn alongside of can become your friends, and then eventually become your family.”

It’s no surprise that GMercyU has been recognized for its academic reputation and commitment to students. We’re proud that in 2023, we received our highest-ever ranking from U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best College Rankings. Within our category as a national university, we jumped 71 places from the prior year – the largest increase of any school in the region and the sixth largest increase nationally.

GMercyU also landed on the Top Performers on Social Mobility list – which honors our success in helping socio-economically disadvantaged students finish college and lead successful lives. That said, if you’re a first-generation college student like so many of our students, check out this helpful advice.

Lastly, GMercyU doesn't just welcome transfer students; it celebrates them. For example, National Transfer Student Week events at GMercyU include freebie giveaways and swag swaps to exchange old college gear for GMercyU gear.

Admissions Process for Transfer Students

Transferring to GMercyU requires just a few simple steps. You can transfer in the spring or fall semester, though we do offer a summer start for our nursing program that accepts transfer students.

Step 1. Apply to GMercyU.

Submit GMercyU’s free application or apply through the Common App and send your official transcripts from previously attended colleges. See more details on that here.

Step 2. Get a Free Unofficial Transfer Evaluation.

Here’s where I come in – after applying, we'll discuss how your credits will apply toward a GMercyU program. We’ll also talk scholarships!

Step 3. Join Griffin Nation!

If you're accepted, make it official by submitting your deposit.

And that’s it.

Transfer Credit Policies

As said above, we’ll conduct a free transfer credit evaluation for you. GMercyU grants up to 90 qualifying credits earned at other two- year and four-year colleges and universities toward a GMercyU bachelor's degree.

To streamline the process, we offer course equivalency guides and various types of agreements with area schools. For example, our dual admissions agreements between GMercyU and other institutions guarantee admission to GMercyU for students who complete their associate degree and meet the agreed-upon requirements.

Our core-to-core agreements mean that if you complete a general education core at a participating college, it will be recognized in full at GMercyU, allowing you to jump straight into more advanced coursework relevant to your major. We also offer articulation agreements and program-to-program agreements.

Our goal is to get you all the credit you deserve toward your future GMercyU degree!

“I have always heard that GMercyU had a good reputation. It is also a partner school with Montgomery County Community College, and all of the classes I took transferred right over,” said Sierrah Wiszneski ’24.

Scholarships for Transfer Students and Financial Aid

As an admission counselor, I'm often asked “Do transfer students get scholarships?” The answer is yes!

In fact, at GMercyU, we offer transfer students guaranteed scholarships and grants that range from $10,000 to $17,000 and don’t need to be repaid. The scholarships for transfer students are available to full-time students with at least 24 credits from another postsecondary institution and are renewable every year.

Check out our Gold and Crimson Transfer Student Scholarships, Transfer Student Grant, and Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Student Scholarship on our Scholarships for Transfer Students page.

In addition to these scholarships, you may also qualify for need-based state and federal aid. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with GMercyU’s school code (003270) to find out.

If you have any questions, our trained financial aid professionals have many years of experience helping students with all facets of financial aid – GMercyU scholarships, scholarships hosted by other organizations and non-profits, loans, grants, work-study options, and more.

Our goal is to make your GMercyU education as affordable as possible.

GMercyU's vibrant campus life welcomes transfer students into a community that feels like family to both residents and commuters.

You could join one of our many clubs, athletic teams, or student organizations or participate in our many annual traditions like our Christmas Tree Lighting (a Hallmark movie come to life) or Finals Breakfast (with your professors serving the meals!).
