On Wednesday, February 1, GMercyU will be celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day with its second annual 5K/mile walk.
There is no registration required and all community members are encouraged to participate. Participants will meet at the GMercyU Athletic Complex turf at 4:30 p.m.
The event will be accompanied by a social media campaign featuring student-athlete thoughts on the significance of women’s sports and the importance of sports in women’s lives.
National Girls & Women in Sports Day was established in 1987 by the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF). It serves as a special day in our nation to recognize women’s sports. Since its inception, this day has united premiere organizations and elite women athletes to help bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. The WSF was established in 1974 with the goal of advancing the lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity. The organization’s mission is to enable girls and women to reach their fullest potential in sports and life. The WSF provides financial fuel to aspiring champion athletes, funds groundbreaking research, and educates, advocates, and helps communities get girls active.
