About Sigma Phi Sigma
Originally organized in 1960, Sigma Phi Sigma is the National Mercy Honor Society sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. The original purpose of the organization was to recognize and celebrate the value of the women of Mercy. The three ideals of Sigma Phi Sigma are Scholarship, Fidelity, and Service. GMercyU held its first induction ceremony in 1961.
The first ideal of Sigma Phi Sigma is Scholarship. Students much maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, have no academic integrity violations on their record, and be recommended by at least one faculty member to apply for membership. Throughout the duration of their membership, students must continue their academic success.
The next ideal is Fidelity. To uphold this ideal, students must provide evidence of them supporting the mission and values of Gwynedd Mercy University. Faculty who recommend students must bear witness to the student's character by citing examples of how the student lives the Core Values of GMercyU and Sigma Phi Sigma's ideals.
The last idea of Sigma Phi Sigma is Service. Students must demonstrate a clear commitment of service to both GMercyU and its surrounding community. Whether through extracurricular or community-based activities, students have provided service to those who are poor or marginalized in the community. Sigma Phi Sigma plays a key role in executing the Holiday Outreach and supports the Take Back the Night initiative.
