GMercyU Collaborates with Salve Regina, Carlow University, and Misericordia University to Support Refugee Settlement

In Spring 2024, Salve Regina was selected to receive an Innovation Incentive Grant from Supporting Higher Education in Refugee Resettlement (SHERR) in partnership with Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island. The grant supports the project “Building Case Management Capacity in Rhode Island and Beyond.”

Part of the project includes a collaboration between GMercyU, Carlow University, Misericordia University, and Salve Regina to focus on extending knowledge-building by focusing on Mercy and the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. GMercyU’s role in the grant is to educate Mercy Social Work students about refugee and immigration settlement needs by enhancing curriculum activities.

The grant supported a two-day conference at Salve Regina that welcomed educators and students from all four universities. Sessions focused on the global refugee settlement system, immigration statuses within the U.S., and the resources available. Other topics includes stages of trauma, cultural awareness, student integration, and strategies for advocacy.
