Nursing Student Receives FNSNA Scholarship
Nyla Wharwood, sophomore Nursing student, recently received the Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association (FNSNA) Scholarship. The FNSNA awards scholarships to support and cultivate the next generation of diverse nurse leaders and innovators. Nyla applied for the scholarship more than once during her college journey and was thrilled to receive it this year.
“Receiving a scholarship from the FNSNA has had a profound impact on both my personal and academic goals as I pursue my nursing education at GMercyU. Personally, it has provided much-needed relief during a time when financial stress made it difficult to stay focused on my studies. Balancing academics, work, and extracurriculars can be overwhelming, and when financial barriers arrive, it can feel discouraging, especially when they prevent me from pursuing opportunities that enrich my nursing journey,” shared Nyla. “This scholarship became a sparkle of light, hope, and pride in the midst of my busy life.”
Each year, the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) hosts a convention for the nursing community to gather as one. After receiving the scholarship from FNSNA and with encouragement from her peers, Nyla had the opportunity to attend the convention to engage with fellow nurses and nursing students.
Receiving the scholarship has afforded Nyla the chance to take full advantage of GMercyU’s resources and opportunities, such as the nursing study abroad trip to Ireland during summer 2025. Her application spoke to her passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion, making her more thrilled to immerse herself in the culture of Ireland while connecting with other nurses from around the globe.
“My passion for nursing stems from my delight for people. My core values are devoutness, love, and peace. Therefore, the field of nursing perfectly embraces who I am as an individual as I seek to show love, kindness, and respect to others during their time of need. As a future nurse, I look forward to showing people empathy and affection. I believe people need someone who is there for them,” Nyla said.
