Social Work Students Travel to Harrisburg for LEAD
GMercyU’s Social Work traveled to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for the National Association of Social Workers of PA (NASWPA) Legislative Advocacy Day (LEAD) on Tuesday, March 25. The group met with Senator Maria Collett to discuss two bills impacting social workers: the SWEET Bill and the Social Work Compact Bill.
The SWEET Bill is designed to provide internship stipends for students in social work programs in PA and the Social Work Compact Bill is meant to allow license reciprocity for social workers across states.
“What I take away from LEAD Day is that even if you have doubts, you can make a difference. I felt that just by showing up our presence is valuable and that our voice matters even as students. I also felt that I made an imprint, even if small, towards something that will help all social workers, such as advocating for the Compact and SWEET Bill,” shared Diana Maldonado. “To be with 600 other social workers felt like we came together and formed one big justice force. I could feel the power behind so many advocates.”
In addition to Advocacy Day, GMercyU's BSW students have access to various opportunities to further develop their skills and broaden their expertise, including service trips to Jamaica, internships and simulations.
Participating in these real-world experiences, such as advocating for new legislation in our state capital, is just another way our future social work Distinctive Mercy Graduates are gearing up to change the world for the better, no matter what path they choose to pursue.
