Current Position: Registered Nurse (RN) on Surgical Step Down Unit at Einstein Montgomery
Story Last Updated: Summer 2024
Brooke Balkiewicz graduated from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in 2020 and it was her mentor, one of her science teachers, who led her towards GMercyU and its nursing program.
I chose nursing because I have always loved the sciences, but I really love people too. Nursing combines the best of both worlds (little Hannah Montana reference for you).
Brooke loved her time in the BSN program, despite it being one of the toughest undergraduate degrees to pursue. However, the rigorous coursework helped Brooke become a stronger student and feel more confident in her ability to become a nurse.
She completed a number of clinical rotations at surrounding hospitals.
“All of those experiences gave me further understanding of how different facilities function,” Brooke said.
Involvement on Campus
Even as a commuter, Brooke didn't missed out on “the college experience.”
One of my favorite things was the ability to get involved. It is what you make of it, and I did just that.
Brooke was involved in a number of clubs and organizations across campus, including Open Jam and Cancer Awareness Club. However, she was most involved with GMercyU’s chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was President for three years.
“We, as a club, raised awareness and funds for various gender related issues. We made connections with the Laurel House, Philadelphia SANE nursing, The Pad Project, and more. Being a part of this group was extremely rewarding,” Brooke shared. “I had the opportunity to meet with government officials and was a part of important university decision-making. It’s provided philanthropic fulfillment and helped me make lifelong friends and mentors.”
Post-Graduation
After graduating in May 2024, Brooke took her NCLEX exam and passed, allowing her to begin her career as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Einstein Montgomery on the surgical step down unit. Eventually, she’d like to end up in Hospice or Palliative, but the possibilities are endless.
“I am sure my learning will not stop at GMercyU,” said Brooke.
