Charlotte Walker
Psychology 2023
“My favorite part about GMercyU is how much the staff and faculty push you to strive to be your best self. All of the professors I had during my time here have always been supportive both in and outside the classroom and truly exemplify the mission of the university. Dr. Roz and Ali in the Student Engagement Office have pushed and supported me in trying new things and branching out during my time here,” Charlotte said.
Charlotte Walker graduated from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia, Pa. in 2019. While doing research on colleges with her high school counselor, Charlotte found GMercyU.
Once I came across GMercyU, I just knew this was where I was supposed to be.
At Accepted Students Day, Charlotte met Dr. Rouseline Emmanuel-Frenel, Director of Student Engagement. Just that brief conversation with Dr. Roz made her feel like GMercyU was the right place for her.
Involvement on Campus
Charlotte is one of GMercyU’s most engaged and involved student leaders. She currently services as Vice President for both Student Activities Committee and Residence Hall Association, and is Secretary of Student Government Association. Charlotte is a member of both Black Student Union and the Psychology Program Advisory Board, a student worker in the Office for Student Engagement, and an orientation leader for New Student Orientation. Lastly, Charlotte is an Emerging Leader in GMercyU’s Griffin Student Leadership Institute.
Not only is Charlotte extremely involved on campus, but she is also a resident.
“I am extremely grateful to be able to live on campus. Living on campus has afforded me the privilege of being able to see and hang out with my friends daily and to be more involved on campus,” Charlotte shared.
Experience in Psychology
Originally, Charlotte enrolled as an undecided major, and after taking classes from the different majors, she decided that Psychology was the right choice.
“All the professors in the Psychology program are great, but Dr. Rebecca Gullan and Dr. John Gunn really made the courses I took with them worthwhile. You can tell they put hard work and effort into educating and supporting the success of their students,” Charlotte said.
While she has not completed research yet, Charlotte is in the process of getting approval from the University IRB to conduct research for her Experimental Psychology class. Charlotte and her partner plan to research sexual relationships.
Internships
Charlotte is currently interning at Laurel House, a Domestic Violence organization located in Montgomery County. She is a shelter and housing intern at their safe haven, primarily working the domestic violence hotline, assisting residents with housing searches, and more.
“A big takeaway that I learned from interning and from taking Dr. Phillip’s Stalking and Domestic Violence course here at GMercyU is that domestic violence has no specific ‘look.’ Everyone’s situation is different, and it can happen to anyone,” Charlotte shared.
Why GMercyU?
“I would recommend GMercyU to a prospective student because it has something to offer for everyone. I’d recommend to get involved in a club, sport, etc. in addition to classes to make new memories and creating new relationships. Getting involved on campus gave me the opportunity to branch out of my comfort zone and find new interests that I would not have tried before,” Charlotte said.
Post-Graduation
After graduating from GMercyU, Charlotte plans to attend Widener University to obtain her Master’s in Counseling with a Trauma Recovery Certificate.
“I am very passionate about domestic violence and hope to open my own domestic violence shelter in the future,” Charlotte said.
