Professor Silvesti’s main goal is to get us a job and an internship. In the end that’s all that really matters.
I originally started out as a nursing major at a different university. I spent a year there and then realized I wanted to live closer to home so I transferred to Gwynedd Mercy University my sophomore year. I came here as a nursing major and about halfway through the fall semester of my junior year I realized I didn’t want to study nursing anymore.
So, I started taking career quizzes because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I always liked science and math and I got some guidance from other people telling me you can’t go wrong with accounting. So, now I’m an accounting major.
The transition from nursing to accounting was pretty smooth. When I met with Professor Silvesti, he really made it an easy transition. The professors knew my name pretty quickly and that I wasn’t a traditional freshman in the business department.
GMercyU’s business department is small so you’re able to interact with your professors. Professor Silvesti’s main goal is to get us a job and an internship. In the end that’s all that really matters. We go to career fairs and have a lot of other opportunities to network with companies from the area.
Recently, I was invited to speak at a Board of Trustees meeting to share how Professor Hoffman incorporates the Mercy values in the business courses. It was a really cool experience to meet with the important people of the University.
I shared the project I was involved in where we picked various articles that talked about the Mercy values like human rights and immigration. We then had to explain how we can apply the values in the business world. It’s not about religion. It’s simply about being a good human. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, it is about treating everyone equally.
I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Ireland for two weeks in the summer of 2016. GMercyU provided the most amazing experience that allowed me to connect with Irish culture and learn about the rich history and literature of the country while traveling all around Ireland.
