The Biology program, and the entire University is filled with people who truly encapsulate the core values of the school. They are some of the kindest and most supportive staff and faculty I could ask for.
Nicole Rival, a graduate of Kingsway Regional High school, is one of most involved students on campus. She is currently the President of Student Government Association, the Secretary of Student Activities Committee, and a Resident Assistant. She was also a member of the Women’s Tennis Team for two years.
“My favorite part of GMercyU will always be the people,” Nicole said.
Experience in the Biology Program
Originally a Nursing major, Nicole switched to Biology and is currently in her third semester of the program. She’s loved it so far.
The support I have received from the faculty has been unmatched. Since I am part of a smaller program, I have been able to form such a tight bond with everyone I work with, which is great.
While she loves all of her professors, she credits Dr. Maria Winters for inspiring her passion for Chemistry.
“She helped me fall in love with Chemistry, and inspired me to pursue a PhD in Chemistry after GMercyU,” said Nicole.
Nicole has recently applied to a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at Villanova University and hopes to conduct research with Dr. Winters during Summer 2023.
Since Nicole’s schedule was filled, she was granted the flexibility to take BIO203, General Biology, as an independent study.
“In that lab, I learned and conducted fly research and was able to breed genetically mutated flies to study the mutations. I have also been able to learn lots of chemistry lab skills, such as distillations, chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy (IR),” Nicole explained.
Why Choose GMercyU?
Out of the many things Nicole loves about GMercyU, she would highlight the relationships she has built so far.
“The small nature of this school really sets it apart from larger schools. You can build close relationships with your professors, and they are always open to help, even outside of designated office hours,” shared Nicole.
Post-Graduation
Nicole is expected to graduate from GMercyU with her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2024. After graduating, she plans to earn a master’s degree and eventually be accepted into a doctoral program for Chemistry.
“Ideally, I hope to get my thesis in either astrochemistry or physical chemistry and work with space,” said Nicole.
