Scott Boyle
Public Health 2022
Current Position: Regulatory Affairs Research Specialist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center
Scott Boyle’s first visit to GMercyU reminded him of a country club.
“There were beautiful fields and they served amazing food,” Scott said. “I was also very impressed with the students and how kind they were to me.”
After visiting, Scott further researched GMercyU and his interest increased.
“As I prepared to choose a college, it became clear that Gwynedd Mercy University’s central values were in alignment with my future aspirations and career goals. The professors demonstrated exceptional, genuine care for students and were passionate about ensuring their personal and professional success,” Scott said.
Why Public Health?
I chose Public Health because I wanted to pursue a career in medical research. I also chose it because I wanted to be involved in healthcare through more natural healing methods. I learned 'upstream thinking' which allowed me to analyze data to prevent diseases from occurring in certain populations.
Scott was part of GMercyU’s first graduating cohort of the undergraduate Public Health program, and he loved his experience in the program, especially Dr. Sharla Willis’s classes and creating the community garden on campus.
“Dr. Willis’s teaching had an impact on my personal life and she’s influenced me to create a garden in my own backyard,” Scott said.
He also loved his classes with Professor Bernabeo, Dr. Warnick, and Dr. Baker.
“Dr. Baker encouraged me to pursue research, and I credit her to my foundational knowledge. She even helped me become IRB Certified to begin working on some research projects. She is the reason I am in my career,” Scott shared.
Internship and Research Experience
Throughout his undergraduate experience, Scott completed two internships. In his first internship, at Clario, Scott studied processes involved in clinical trials across various phases of development. He was also tasked with managing new studies during their transition of merging companies.
His second internship was with the Central Bucks Emergency Management System on the business analytics team. Through grant writing, Scott learned about public health organization management and how to actualize public health policies into practice.
Scott also had the opportunity to conduct research within his program. He conducted a retrospective qualitative analysis of the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns and the effects on young adult mental health.
Life on Campus
My favorite part about my GMercyU experience was being the school mascot.
As the M.E.R.V. the Griffin, Scott played a key role attending GMercyU’s most treasured traditions, such as Griffin Madness, the Christmas Tree Lighting, and Admissions events.
He was also an active member of the Public Health Club, Student Government Association (SGA), and Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP).
“Gwynedd Mercy University is the perfect place for students to develop their strengths and to receive support throughout their academic journey,” Scott said.
Volunteer Work
Scott was inspired by his Public Health studies to develop a project to provide community support and nutrition services to individuals struggling with housing instability and food insecurity in West Philadelphia. He also volunteered as an Emergency Medial Technician throughout the pandemic.
Post-Graduation
Since graduating from GMercyU in 2022, Scott secured a position as a Regulatory Affairs Research Specialist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center. He is currently seeking out graduate programs with a focus on quality assurance to further his career.
