When I was young, I always told people how I wanted to be the Phillie Phanatic. While my career choice had changed, my wish to become a mascot did not.
As a senior at Gwynedd Mercy University, I often like to think back to all of the people who have helped me along the way.
During my first week as a freshman, I made my way to the Student Services office to find out information on our school mascot, MERV the Griffin. It was then that I figured out the person who used to be MERV recently graduated and the spot was open. When I was young, I always told people how I wanted to be the Phillie Phanatic. While my career choice had changed, my wish to become a mascot did not. After an interview, I was chosen to be the new mascot. I spent my freshman and sophomore year bringing joy and school spirit all across campus. This was an experience I hold near and dear to my heart.
All throughout my time at GMercyU, I have been interested in going to the Dominican Republic for Alternative Spring Break. Last year, I made that dream a reality. My entire junior year was spent collecting donations to help the poverty stricken villages. The excitement grew over the year and finally it was time to depart. Instantly, you could see the poverty all around us. Upon entering the villages, the look of happiness on the natives' faces was unbelievable. This put my life into perspective and helped me become not only a better nurse, but a better person.
Gwynedd Mercy University has given me experiences both in the classroom and in the real world. I am a proud graduate of the former ASN program for almost two years and am a registered nurse. My first job working with critically ill patients on ventilators has given me the opportunity to see that all patients are people. Sometimes in the hospital, it's hard to see that, but my job has given me a sturdy base on how to have strong relationships with patients.
I recently started a new job at Aria-Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. on the Cardiac-Stroke Unit. I'm already in love with the high intensity environment and can't wait to see where this career will take me.
