M.E.R.V. the Griffin
The who, what, when, where, why, and how of GMercyU’s mascot
Who is he?
He’s the best! He’s been GMercyU’s beloved mascot since 2005. He was even once named a Top College Mascot.
What is he?
He’s a Griffin. With the head of an eagle and the body of a lion, a Griffin is a symbol of enormous strength and vigor, symbolizing an ability to meet challenges head on.
When and where can you see him?
He loves to spread school spirit at big events, from Orientation to Commencement, holidays, exam time, and more. Sometimes he also wanders campus just for fun!
Why is he called M.E.R.V.?
M.E.R.V stands for Mercy Education, Rigorous intellect, and Valuing diversity.
(Your parents or grandparents might remember that Merv Griffin was also a famous American media mogul from the 1960s to the 1980s. You can thank him for creating shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. A not-so random coincidence!)
How can you become M.E.R.V.?
Do you have school spirit and can you keep a secret that it’s you in the costume? Those are the main job requirements.
A few other things: M.E.R.V. is tall. Those who’re at least 5’9” will fit his costume. He doesn’t talk, so you’d have to be good at spreading sunshine in other ways.
His costume can get hot, but he doesn’t hang out for long. You’d be working in roughly 2-hour shifts at various events, including time spent getting the costume on and off.
